CAPCA is an all-volunteer state-wide organization that brings together parents, advocates, and attorneys to engage in legislative and policy advocacy to protect the rights of, and address matters that concern, students with disabilities in California. CAPCA is having an annual conference on Friday, August 9, 2019 and Saturday, August 10, 2019 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the HELP Group's Sherman Oaks West Campus. There will be a no-host networking dinner on Friday night (location TBA). Lunches will provide opportunities for organizing as well as regional and disability specific networking. There will be 18 different speakers from both Southern and Northern California. Topics include 9th Circuit, CA District Court, CA State Court and When/How to Proceed in Court, Amicus Resources, Augumentative and Alternative Communication, Transition Services/Graduation, CA Autism Services Today and Dealing with Non-LEA Agencies and Insurance, Settling Merits and Fees, Representing Students of Color, Immigrants, and Language Minority Students and Families, Analyzing Reading Deficits, Curricula, and Methodology After Endrew F, and Developments in Serving Students with Mental Health Needs. There will be a General CAPCA Meeting on Saturday afternoon following with Initial Committee Meetings.
This conference is open to lawyers and non-lawyers advocates who represent students and parents and who do not represent school districts or regional centers. We also invite students, family members, and friends who have basic background in special education processes and law and whose presence would not pose conflicts of interest.
Cost: $125 for currently-paid CAPCA attorney members, $150 for non-CAPCA attorneys; $100 for non-lawyer advocates, and $75 for parents/other family members. The per-person cost covers lunch and snacks for both days, materials, and one free year of CAPCA list-serve access (pending vetting and approval). Checks should be made payable to "CAPCA" and sent to Miho Murai, CAPCA Treasurer, to 1525 N. Alvarado St. #26543, Los Angeles, CA 90026 no later than Friday, August 2, 2019.
